Summary

The UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) only examines the absolute grounds for refusal for British trademarks, adopts the Nice Classification, multiple class application is acceptable (additional fees may apply).

Application Procedure

  1. Similarity search: Confirm whether there are similar trademarks or not.
  2. Submit an application to the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO): The formality examination and the distinctiveness examination, the examination period is around 2 months. The UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) will notify the applicant of the search result of the prior trademarks, but it will not be used as a basis for rejection.
  3. Publication: The opposition period is two months.
  4. Decision of grant: If there is no opposition after publication, the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) will issue the Certificate directly.
  5. A trademark registration is valid for 10 years as of the filing date, and it is renewable for periods of 10 years.
